I think it is safe to say that most of us would love to sport full healthy lashes, however some of us may not have been blessed with long and thick lashes, so we improvise.
We apply loads of mascara and not just in one formula we layer two and three different formulas (I know I do) to get the desired effect, and if we don't achieve the desired effect from the mascara, we then reach for the false lashes.
Then at the end of the day to remove all of the product that we layered on our lashes, we often tug, pull and rub to get rid of it, only to wake up the next morning to do it all again.
This repeated routine can really cause damage to the lashes causing them to thin and fall out, so today I thought I would share some of the ways that you can care for your lashes.
- Clean lashes every night with a gentle cleanser - Sleeping in mascara causes the lashes to become dry and brittle which can make them break. It is also just as important to use a gentle cleanser to remove eye makeup effectively without being harsh.
- Keep them moisturized - Apply a small amount of coconut oil or olive oil or Vaseline with a q-tip each night. (be sure to use only a small amount as too much can lead to puffy irritated eyes in the morning)
- Treat your lashes gently - Avoid tugging, pulling and rubbing as this can damage the hair follicles causing you to lose lashes.
- Condition - Apply a lash conditioner before applying your mascara. Look for conditioners that contain keratin as this will help strengthen and moisturize your lashes.
- Save the waterproof mascara for special occasions - Waterproof formulas are extremely drying on the lashes which can cause them to snap. This type of formula is also more difficult to remove without having to tug and pull at your lashes.
- Toss your mascara every 3 months - Not only can using expired mascara make your lashes dry and brittle, it can also lead to serious eye infections, so be sure to toss when expired.
- Have a mascara free day - Try to go at least one day a week without applying mascara. Instead, apply a thin layer of Vaseline or use a lash conditioner.
- Keep false lashes to a minimum - Applying false lashes too often can weaken the roots of your own lashes causing them to fall out and removing them can accidentally pull out some of your own lashes.
Caring for your lashes is something that most of us do not even think about, and as you can see after reading this post, there is so much more that goes into caring for your lashes other than just picking out the right mascara shade, or finding the right mascara formula.

I have never really paid much attention to the health of my eyelashes, so thanks for bringing that topic up Keisha - very helpful! I have never actually worn false lashes before, so at least that's one point ticked off haha :)

Amazing tips! Mascara is the only product I use. Taking good care of my lashes is much needed. Especially after burning the tips of my left lashes, while lighting a cigarette...
ReplyDeleteWill use the conditioning on my mascara free days. Also may switch up my brand of choice due to it being waterproof.

Oh goodness! That must have been scary! I think using waterproof in moderation is fine, so def save it for those special occasions :)

I agree, you definitely need to take care of your lashes. Cleanliness is so important. I have only used false lashes on special occasions since I have quite thick lashes, and have not mastered putting falsies on yet. Great post. /Madison

These are great tips! I agree about mascara formulas. The waterproof ones and ones that are just difficult to remove make me nervous. I usually end up taking out some of my lashes even when I'm careful!
ReplyDeletegreat product!!kiss
