Benefits of Exfoliating.

Hello Gals!

It really has been too long and I have missed you all so much!  It really feels good to be blogging again.

Today, to get the ball rolling again, I thought we would jump right in with skin care....one of my favorite topics!

Benefits of exfoliating the skin

As most of you know, taking care of your skin every day by cleansing, toning and moisturizing is very beneficial however, there is another important factor to having and maintaining healthy skin and that is to exfoliate.

Incorporating exfoliation into your skin care routine is a fantastic way to perk up dull skin and improve the skins' appearance.

Benefits of Exfoliating:
  • Improves the Skins texture and Maintains Youthful Appearance: Exfoliating buffs away dead skin cells allowing the new underlying fresh and healthy cells to be visible, resulting in your complexion having a radiant glow. Also, as we age our skin loses elasticity allowing those pesky little wrinkles to appear, exfoliating can also help reduce the appearance of them. It also speeds up the cell renewal process which also decreases as we age.
  • Reduces the Appearance of Pores: In addition to removing dead skin cells, exfoliating reaches deep down into pores removing all the dirt and debris. Pores appear to be larger when dirt and grime is trapped in them. After exfoliation, pores should reduce in size giving your skin a smoother look.
  • Helps Acne Prone Skin: When acne prone skin sheds, cells glue together and stick to the skin, which clogs pores leading to black heads and blemishes. Therefore, exfoliating regularly is essential for acne prone skin.
  • Increases Absorption: Once the dead skin cells have been exfoliated from the skin, moisturizers and other skin care essentials will be absorbed more effectively.

Even though exfoliating is beneficial, it can also have a few negative effects if done incorrectly or done too often eg. raw red skin, broken capillaries etc.
I recommend exfoliating at least once or twice a week.

Tell Tail Signs of Over Exfoliation
  • Irritation and redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Excessively dry skin
  • Broken blood vessels

If you find that you have over exfoliated, to soothe the skin use mild products that have calming and soothing ingredients like Vitamin E, Chamomile, Cucumber etc. and try to avoid products that are heavily scented and that contain exfoliators.

Thanks for reading Gals! I hope this post was useful to you.

Do you exfoliate? If so, what is your go to product?

  6. I love face washes that have exfoliants in them. My favorite is the Clarins One Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser but its pretty expenisve so I have started purchasing drug store ones instead. The Garnier Clean + Balancing Daily Exfoliator for Combination Skin is nice but I need to find an even more gritty one.

  12. Actually I stopped using mechanical exfoliators more than 5 years ago (the scrub type) and I only use chemical exfoliation (AHA/BHA, retinol, enzymes...). My skin feels better that way!
