Hello Gals!!
When it comes to choosing an eye product, it can be a little tricky and a little overwhelming with all the choices on the market today.
I'm often asked: "How do I know which eye cream is best for me?" Or "Why do I even need an eye cream when my moisturizer seems to work just fine?"
So Today I thought that I would share what I know about eye creams and the difference between cream, serum and gel.
Why We Need a Separate Cream For The Eyes:
The skin around our eyes is very fragile and is also a few layers thinner than the rest of the skin on the face. Because the skin is so much thinner, using your daily day-time moisturizer or night time moisturizer is much too thick of a consistency for the eye area. The eye area will only take what it needs and the remainder is left to sit on the skin resulting in puffiness.

Eye Cream, Eye Serum and Eye Gel:
Cream, serum or gel? So many choices! My advice is to pick an eye product based on your specific eye needs. In my case, anti-aging is my main concern so I opt for an eye cream that contains anti aging ingredients and that also has moisturizing properties as my skin is also on the drier side.

There is no real difference between eye serums and eye creams other than the consistency. Eye creams have a richer texture and to me they feel more nourishing.
Eye gels are a little different though. They are mainly used to reduce puffiness, revive tired eyes and to treat dark circles, however they lack the moisture of an eye cream which makes it great for an oilier skin and not so great for a drier skin. Once applied, eye gels absorb quickly into the skin, (quicker than a cream) leaving no residue which makes it an awesome base for applying your makeup.
How to use an Eye Cream:
Eye creams are most beneficial when used twice a day, in the morning and at night. The key thing to remember is that a little goes a long way, only the smallest amount is needed to nourish the skin around the eyes.
Take a tiny amount and distribute between your ring fingers and apply to the eye area by gently dabbing. Start at the bottom and lightly pat along to the outer corner and around under the brow until all the product has been absorbed. It is important that you do not stretch the eye area by pulling or tugging. Also take care not to apply to close to the eye as this may cause some irritation.

SPF? Yay or Nay:
This is a tough one! It so difficult for me to say "Nay" as I am a firm believer of SPF! But SPF can compromise the effectiveness of anti-wrinkle ingredients and makes the consistency of an eye cream too heavy be absorbed, which again can lead to puffiness and irritation. Now I am not saying ditch the SPF altogether, just be sure that you incorporate into another other area of your beauty routine for example, in your foundation, concealer or face powder. Your skin must be protected at all times!

What is your eye product preference, cream serum or gel?

Agree on the SPF in eye cream hence I never use one with it. I do however lightly run my fingers over my eye areas when I apply my moisturizer that has SPF in it so hopefully it offers some protection.

SPF can be a little tricky when it comes to beauty products...especially in eye cream. So yes, making sure that your other products have SPF is important. Thanks for popping by Shireen.

So helpful, thanks Keisha. I've recently started looking into eye creams, definitely wanting to prevent any aging signs. Although I'm only in my 20's, I have to be proactive. Haha! I've been using Origins Gin-Zing in the morning and a Shiseido Eye Concentrate at night, it was a sample and I love it. But it's SO pricey!

It is never to early to fight the signs of aging. I started using anti aging products when I was in my 20's also. I had been eyeing up some of the Shiseido products also so I know what you mean by pricey lol!

I really like eye gels but may prefer a serum or cream once thinness becomes an issue for me.
ReplyDeleteGels are so nice and cooling on the eye area. I don't use them very often, but when I do my eyes look so refreshed. Thanks for reading Tanya.

So many people think their regular moisturizer will cut it. NOT the case! Cream made specifically for the eyes is so much better. Great post Keisha.

So true Kim! Eyes need more than a regular moisturizer.

Personally, I prefer creams as they keep my skin feeling moisturized. And in the summer I use gels.
ReplyDeleteRecently, I've had some weird skin rash/eczema on the top of my eye lid that I just can't seem to get rid of. Can you suggest any good creams to help?

Oh wow, that must be a little uncomfortable, I would definitely suggest going to your doctor/dermatologist to see what product is best to treat it without being harsh on the eye area. Hope it all works out for you Jackie :)

I agree with you, it is really important to take a good care of our eyes, the most delicate part of our face. One thing I didn't know until recently, we must use the eye cream/serum before anything else, if we use it after our moisturising cream, the area under our eyes will absorb the cream and will not benefit at all from the eye cream. So always use the eye cream first!! Great post! :)

Applying eye cream before your moisturizer is def a must, for that exact reason! Thanks so much for bringing up that useful tip.

I underestimated the power of eye-creams up until now when I saw this haha
ReplyDeleteI'm going to give the body shop a try as I usually get my skincare products from there anyways

Nice article. I just tell people to wear sunglasses SPF under the eye won't be necessary then. If they do want it, I recommend eye cream that has SPF in it.

This is a lot of helpful information! I use spf even around my eyes, but I'm extra sensitive to the sun. I don't even chance it. I do understand how that can cause a problem depending on what products you're using together, though.
ReplyDeleteSo true! If your if anti-wrinkle is not a concern for you than def stick with using spf in your eye cream. Thanks so much for reading Lauren
